Myth vs Fact: Eating Disorders Are A Lifestyle Choice

eating disorders are not a lifestyle choice
Share this story

Eating disorders are serious and potentially life threatening mental illnesses; they are not a lifestyle choice or a diet gone ‘too far’.

In this day and age, physical appearance is one of the most important factors in many people’s lives, especially among the younger generations. This is, in part, thanks to the growing popularity of Facebook, Instagram and various other social networks and how beauty is portrayed through advertising and marketing on these platforms.

It has become almost “normal” for people to starve themselves just to attain that slim figure that is seen as beautiful, even if it means that physical harm is done in order to achieve it. Although this is a serious issue on its own, instances where a person starves themselves or takes to extreme dieting for this purpose are often referred to as eating disorders whereas they are not.

A true eating disorder is not a choice and is in no way affiliated with vanity or attempting to achieve beauty. Eating disorders such as anorexia and binge-eating disorder are serious mental health conditions which can potentially be life-threatening and need to be treated as such.

These disorders can have a significant impact on the heart, digestive system, bones, teeth and the overall health of the patient who is suffering from the illness and they can also lead to serious physical health issues and diseases.

Many people who suffer from eating disorders often don’t realize that they have a problem or they are too ashamed to admit it and seek help. With the correct guidance and professional help, eating disorders can be controlled and treated in order to prevent it from inflicting further harm on its victim.
